I spent the early years of my career aspiring to and working toward becoming a people leader. That's the path, right? You start as an individual contributor, pay your dues, and get promoted to a leadership position. That's also the path to a higher salary and more prestige. And I did it! When I took my first job as a people leader, I found out how unprepared I was to lead. I had plenty of position skills, but a leader's role is to develop people. I regret the mistakes I made as a first-time people leader. And I want to help organizations develop their leaders who can avoid having those regrets.
I work with middle managers who are supervising and developing first-time people leaders. Too often organizations provide position skills to new leaders -- budgeting, goal setting, meeting management -- but don't help new leaders develop people leadership skills -- listening, communication, recognition. The result is that new leaders develop the habit of leading based on their position rather than leading with humanity. The cost is high turnover, reduced productivity, and disengagement.
I speak on the problems of leading like a position rather than a person to conferences and organizations , providing practical guidelines to help leaders develop first-time managers.
